What is the future of concerts after the Pandemic? No one believes that virtual performances are an adequate replacement for live concerts. There is a special thing about the live music experience that cannot be replicated in a livestreamed event. Audience attendance at performances is the next step to consider after rehearsals begin during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Interestingly, the Barbershop Harmony Society commissioned a survey to measure public attitude towards attending a concert/cultural event. Has ACB considered commissioning this type of study for concert bands? Additionally, the Bamberg Symphony orchestra commissioned a study on the expulsion of air from wind instruments out of concern for both audience and player safety to examine the future of musical performances. Has ACB considered commissioning a study to ensure directors, players and the audience of the safety of the environment of concert bands?

How will our band concerts change? Programming small ensembles and chamber music may become more popular and more easily feasible as they attract smaller audiences where it is possible to maintaing social distancing throughout the hall. A Washington Post article speculated: "Perhaps an enterprising group could commission some spatial music, pieces performed with the musicians spaced widely apart. (A coronavirus cantata?." Would ACB consider commissioning special band music for our post-pandemic future? Yet, our first priority for performing in public must be assessing and mitigating the risk of our audiences. Will they return?

Susan, thank you for opening the discussion!

I would encourage the sharing of information and research about the safety and willingness of audience members to return to performance. It is a very different question than when it is safe for our musicians to return to rehearsals. The COVID -19 Forum was developed to encourage discussion and the sharing of information, current research, suggestions, adaptations, attitudes, timelines and every aspect of our band experience that has been affected by COVID-19. The Forum was ACB’s response to an immediate need that had been expressed by several of our members. ACB is positioned well for disseminating information to the community band world.

ACB has supported credited research with direct relevance to community bands in the past, but currently, the organization is not positioned to do our own research. In this time, with so many unknowns, it's impossible to predict if ACB will become more involved in sponsoring research. We have never been a research organization, but ACB may be in a position to support research in other ways. This Forum encourages the sharing of the most current research and discussion of the research.

In response to, “Would ACB consider commissioning special band music for our post-pandemic future?” This is an interesting idea for consideration of the ACB leadership!

Susan,
Thanks to you and ACB for sponsoring research on aerosolized droplets and wind instruments, along with many other musical organizations! Perhaps that project will precipitate additional research on the subject of audience attitudes as our society continues to get through this public health crisis.

Susan,

While ACB isn't able to sponsor research of its own, it can serve as a central information bank for all the latest research projects regarding bands and COVID-19 currently being done in the US and abroad. It would be helpful for ACB members to be able a access all this information without having to spend a great deal of time searching for relevant studies among all the research going on out there.

ACB isn't able to support research on our own, HOWEVER, we have joined with over 80 prominent international arts organizations in support of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA)/ National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) COVID-19 Research Coalition. The Coalition has commissioned research at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) and the University of Maryland, "Aerosol Generation from Musical and Theatrical Performers and Risk of Infections Disease Transmission." The objective of these duplicate studies is to determine the effects of COVID-19 on the return to the rehearsal/performance hall and to understand what risks exist in performance venues. https://www.acbands.org/coalition-of-performing-arts-organizations

Additionally, ACB is supporting another important study at Colorado State University (CSU) focused on "Reducing Bioaerosol Emissions and Exposures in the Performing Arts: A Scientific Roadmap for a Safe Return from COVID-19." The study will examine aerosol rates produced by wind instrumentalists, vocalists, and actors. The project objective is to reduce the risk of human exposure and co-infection to SARS-COV-2 Aerosol during performing arts activities.

Thank you for your suggestion for an easy to access compilation of information about COVID-19! Our ACB webmaster is putting together a resource that will make access to research, reference sources and articles readily available from the ACB website. Expect to see it very soon!
