Here is a link to the COVID-19 research that has been done at the US Military Academy Band at West Point. This article is entitled: Army Band COVID-19 Risk Mitigation For Large Groups.

I am very impressed with this article and the band’s research. You will see lots of useful and thoughtful approaches toward mitigating the spread of the COVID-19 virus in a large ensemble environment. This article also includes a band setup diagram.
Please note that the West Point Band is currently preparing for the West Point Graduation on June 13, 2020. Their set of guidelines and the band’s setup were established to support this event. The West Point Band has no intentions of using its concert band (large ensemble) again until possibly later in the Summer. But, these guidelines can certainly be adapted for use by smaller ensembles and possibly modified and used again at a later date for the large concert band.
While looking through the diagrams, take into consideration that the West Point Band has the luxury to rehearse in the US Military Academy’s Athletic Field House (VERY large space). Plus, the band has the capability to purchase and use plexiglass shields, microphones, etc.; AND, the band has a Grammy-Award winning audio technician on its staff to mix all these instruments together for a live performance.
Lastly, the West Point Band coordinated guidance from the CDC, the US Military Academy's health experts and their Regional New York Health Department. You should do the same for your area.
Is this feasible for your group? You’ll have to decide. Nonetheless, there is a ton of good information here. |
