The VERY preliminary results from the CU Boulder research team conducting the aerosol study were released on July 13th. Since then, there have been updates on their website pertaining to recommendations and a continually growing FAQ about the study. The FAQ begins to answer some of the questions many had in reading the initial release. It is linked from the above page.

On July 18th The Flying Baton Podcast posted their Interview with Tehya Stockman a member of the CU Boulder research team working on the aerosol study. She describes some of the methodology, limitations in the first round of testing, future testing plans, and walks through some of the graphs that were part of the first release and explains what those labels mean. For me that was the most useful, as there were some labels which I thought meant one thing, but in reality meant something else entirely.

A reminder: This project will take time, they are only in week 3 of testing of a 6 month project. Science takes time, but they know that schools, bands, orchestras, and choirs want/need to operate on a different timeline, so they released very preliminary results and noted "We are providing these preliminary results to assist in the safe return to classrooms. (Normally we do not release data until they have been quality assessed and peer reviewed)." (Quote from disclaimer in the 7/13/2020 PDF release)

Updated Statement:

With the CDC announcement of reduced physical distancing on March 19, 2021, the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) and the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) have provided an updated statement. You will see that there are not many changes, just clarification: They applaud the CDC on removing the requirement for plexiglass barriers; but, the CDC’s new distancing recommendation only focuses on seated classrooms. With the rapid spread of more aggressive variants, such as the B.117 variant, health officials DO NOT recommend a change in physical distancing for activities that have increased exhalation – like musical ensembles.
