While we are all considering whether or not our groups should return to rehearsal in the fall, I wanted to share what I am doing with the University Heights Symphonic Band in the hopes that it might encourage you to pursue similar opportunities for your ensembles.

I should also mention that in Ohio, we are still not permitted to gather in groups larger than 10 people, and our rehearsal/performance locations are closed because the schools will not be open to outside groups during the 2020-21 academic year. As such, we will be unable to host audiences, so the selections we rehearse during this time will be recorded for broadcast at a later date.

The following guidelines below will be used with chamber/flex band pieces in mind:

1) Those who choose to participate in the fall will be broken up into several groups of between 5-9 players. Players will meet for chunks of 3-4 weeks at a time, rehearse 1 or 2 pieces together and will “perform” the piece. We will record each of these performances, and stitch them together to form a large recording which will be broadcasted. (It is possible that, depending on schedules, we will be able to have multiple groups rehearsing on different days but during the same timeframe.)

2) Rehearsals will be held outdoors for as long as the weather remains suitable. When the weather starts to change, we will decide whether it is safe for us to move indoors or take the winter season off.

3) The ensemble will be seated in such a way that ensures social distancing.

4) Band members will wear masks when they are not performing for extended periods of time.

5) Band members will bring their own chairs, stands, music, equipment, etc., to ensure that no materials are shared.

Band members are currently being surveyed to see who is interested in participating under these conditions and the response so far has been favorable, including those who are working in health care. We are also receiving inquiries from prospective members who wish to join, even while we are using this modified performance model.

As we approach September, our board will reassess where the numbers are in our area and adjust their recommendations accordingly, including recommending to postpone rehearsals if the numbers continue to grow. I hope these ideas help provide some direction for you and your groups as we all continue to navigate this challenging time.

You may also feel free to email me directly if you'd like me to clarify anything: [email protected]

All my best,
Matt

Matthew,
Thank you for sharing. I know what you are describing is what some people have been thinking about but maybe not in that much detail yet, so that should be of great help!

I am very curious how many of our member bands are going to be impacted by schools not allowing outside visitors into their buildings, and many churches are also looking to implement such policies in terms of renting space to outside groups. It really makes sense as the schools in particular have to show sanitizing was done, and while they can ask the group that is coming in to do it, they can't be sure it was done correctly - there may not be enough time or staff to get it done. (Just throwing that in there as that isn't something many people are thinking about when finding out they can't go back into the schools).

An interesting thing I saw last week is something by United Sound. They were experimenting with masks to play instruments through where material can be moved out of the way to to bring the instrument to the lips, but the mask stays on. Flute and double reeds still present a problem. But it is an interesting starting approach. The link below talks about the organization and at the bottom shows the masks and patterns to make them. They also have patterns for coverings for brass and woodwinds. If these masks work well for people, then you don't have to fuss with taking masks on and off or determining how long of a rest do you need to have before putting a mask back on.
